Initial Production Check (IPC) in China

Check materials, components and first production units at the beginning of mass production before problems continue across the full order.
An Initial Production Check (IPC), also called an Initial Production Inspection, is carried out near the beginning of mass production when the materials, components and first production units relevant to your order are available for inspection.
G&D provides independent Initial Production Check services in China to help buyers verify whether production has started according to the approved product requirements.
Our inspector checks the available materials, components, early production pieces, workmanship, specifications, production setup and other agreed requirements, then documents the findings in an independent inspection report.
Starting from USD 160 per man-day.

When Should You Arrange an Initial Production Check?

An IPC should be arranged after actual mass production has started and the materials, components or first production units you want checked are available.
It can be particularly useful when:
  • You are working with a new supplier.
  • A new product is entering mass production for the first time.
  • The product uses new, expensive or critical materials.
  • The order has important dimensions, construction or functional requirements.
  • You have an approved sample that bulk production must follow.
  • Artwork, colors, labels or packaging have recently changed.
  • The order quantity is large and repeated errors could affect many units.
  • Similar products or previous orders have had recurring production problems.
IPC is commonly performed during the early stage of production. The exact timing should depend on the product and actual factory schedule rather than a fixed percentage alone. The relevant materials, components, production setup or early pieces should be available when the inspector attends.
For a practical breakdown of timing and early-production checks, see what to check during an Initial Production Check.

What We Check During an Initial Production Check

The exact IPC checklist depends on your product, specifications and the stage reached on the inspection date.

Raw Materials & Components

Where available and relevant, the inspector checks materials and components against the information you provide.
This may include:
  • Material type
  • Components and accessories
  • Color references
  • Size or specification
  • Visible condition
  • Identification or markings
  • Other product-specific requirements
The inspection records what is available and observable at the factory. Material composition or properties that require laboratory analysis cannot normally be confirmed through visual inspection alone.

First Production Units

Available first production units are checked against the approved requirements.
Depending on the product, this may include:
  • Product appearance
  • Construction
  • Assembly
  • Workmanship
  • Dimensions
  • Color
  • Components and accessories
  • Product markings
The objective is to identify deviations while production is still at an early stage.

Approved Sample & Specifications

Where an approved or golden sample is available at the factory, the inspector can compare early production pieces against it.
Relevant specifications, drawings, product photos, BOM information or other confirmed requirements supplied by the buyer can also be used as inspection references.

Dimensions & Product Details

Important dimensions and product details can be checked against your specifications where suitable measuring methods are available on site.
The checklist can focus on critical measurements or characteristics that could create repeated problems if production starts incorrectly.

Workmanship & Assembly

The inspector checks available production pieces for visible workmanship and assembly issues relevant to the product.
Examples may include:
  • Poor finishing
  • Incorrect assembly
  • Loose or missing components
  • Surface defects
  • Sewing or construction problems
  • Incorrect accessories
  • Other visible deviations from the approved requirements

Function Checks

Basic functional checks can be performed where appropriate and where the required equipment or test conditions are available.
Specialized safety, chemical, performance or compliance testing may require independent laboratory testing.

Color, Artwork & Labeling

Where applicable, the IPC can check available:
  • Product colors
  • Printed artwork
  • Logos
  • Product labels
  • Care labels
  • Warning labels
  • Barcodes
  • Other markings
These are compared against the references provided for the inspection.

Packaging Preparation

If packaging materials are already available, the inspector can check items such as:
  • Retail packaging
  • Polybags
  • Cartons
  • Inserts
  • Labels
  • Shipping marks
  • Barcodes
Packaging may not yet be fully available during an early IPC. The report should therefore distinguish between what was checked and what was not yet available.

Production Setup & Process

The inspector observes the production setup relevant to the order and records information available during the visit.
Depending on the product, this may include:
  • Production line setup
  • Tooling or molds
  • Assembly sequence
  • Available production instructions
  • Relevant machinery
  • Production status
IPC is not a Factory Audit and does not provide a full assessment of the supplier's overall manufacturing capability or management system.

Early Quality Problems

If deviations are identified, the report documents the affected requirements, available examples and supporting photos.
The purpose is to provide early information so that you and the supplier can decide what corrective action is appropriate before substantially more goods are produced.

How Our Initial Production Check Works

1. Send Us Your Order Information

Provide the PO, product specifications, approved sample information, drawings, artwork, packaging requirements and any specific points you want checked.

2. We Confirm the Inspection Scope & Timing

We review your requirements and coordinate the inspection date based on the actual production status and availability of the items that need to be checked.

3. Inspector Visits the Factory

Our inspector attends the production location and confirms the production status and materials, components and early production pieces available for inspection.

4. Early Production Is Checked

The inspector performs the agreed checks on available materials, components, first production units, specifications, workmanship, function, labeling, packaging and production setup as applicable.

5. Receive Your IPC Report

You receive an independent report documenting the inspection results, photos, production status, identified deviations and relevant limitations.

What Information Should You Provide Before the IPC?

Useful information may include:
  • Purchase order
  • Product specifications
  • Approved or golden sample information
  • Technical drawings
  • BOM or component requirements
  • Material requirements
  • Color references
  • Artwork files
  • Labeling requirements
  • Packaging requirements
  • Functional requirements
  • Previous quality problems
  • Your own inspection checklist or critical points
The clearer the inspection references are, the more precisely the inspector can compare early production against your requirements.

What Will You Receive in the IPC Report?

The IPC report may include:
  • Order and inspection information
  • Actual production status observed
  • Materials and components checked
  • Early production units inspected
  • Specification and measurement findings
  • Workmanship observations
  • Function-check results where applicable
  • Color, artwork and labeling findings
  • Packaging status and checks where available
  • Production setup observations
  • Photos of inspected items and relevant findings
  • Deviations or concerns identified
  • Items that were not yet available for checking
  • Relevant limitations of the inspection
The report documents what was available and observed at the time of inspection. The final decision on corrective action or continuation of production remains with the buyer.

IPC vs During Production Check (DPC)

IPC and DPC are both performed during production, but at different stages and for different purposes.
An Initial Production Check is carried out near the beginning of mass production. Its main question is:
Did production start with the correct materials, components, specifications and setup?
A During Production Check (DPC) is performed after a more meaningful quantity has been produced. It examines bulk production quality and production progress while there is still time to take corrective action.
In simple terms:
  • IPC: Has production started correctly?
  • DPC: Is bulk production continuing correctly?

IPC vs Final Random Inspection (FRI)

IPC takes place near the beginning of production, while Final Random Inspection (FRI) is performed after production is completed and the goods have reached the required packing stage.
IPC helps identify early problems before they continue across the order.
FRI checks randomly selected finished goods before shipment and provides information about the final batch.
A satisfactory IPC does not guarantee that the completed order will remain free from defects. Production conditions and workmanship can change as manufacturing continues, so IPC does not replace a final inspection.

What Can and Cannot Be Verified During an IPC?

An IPC can help verify the requirements that are available and observable at the beginning of production, such as:
  • Available raw materials and components
  • First production units
  • Product specifications and dimensions
  • Workmanship and assembly
  • Basic function where applicable
  • Color, artwork and labeling
  • Available packaging materials
  • Relevant production setup
  • Actual production status observed during the visit
However, an IPC cannot guarantee:
  • Quality of the entire completed order
  • Future production consistency
  • Final shipment quantity
  • Final packaging if packaging is not yet available
  • Future delivery performance
  • Material composition that requires laboratory analysis
  • Formal safety or compliance performance requiring specialized testing
It is a point-in-time inspection of the production stage available on the inspection date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Initial Production Check?

An IPC is an early-stage product inspection carried out near the beginning of mass production. It checks available materials, components, first production units and other agreed requirements against the buyer's specifications.

When should IPC be performed?

IPC should be arranged after actual mass production has started and the materials, components or early production pieces relevant to your inspection are available.

Does production need to be exactly 10% complete?

No. Around the first 10% can be a useful reference for some products, but the correct timing depends on the manufacturing process and what needs to be checked. The key point is to inspect early enough for corrective action while ensuring the relevant production items are actually available.

Is IPC the same as Pre-Production Inspection?

The terminology is not completely consistent across inspection companies. Some providers use IPC and Pre-Production Inspection interchangeably, while others use Pre-Production Inspection for checks conducted before mass production actually starts.
For G&D, this page uses Initial Production Check for an inspection conducted near the beginning of actual mass production when relevant materials, components and first production pieces are available.

Does IPC replace Final Random Inspection?

No. IPC checks the beginning of production. FRI checks randomly selected finished goods before shipment. A successful IPC cannot confirm the final quality of the completed batch.

Can you check raw materials during IPC?

Yes, where the relevant materials are available and can be checked against the information supplied. Properties requiring laboratory analysis cannot be confirmed through visual inspection alone.

How much does an Initial Production Check cost in China?

Our Initial Production Check service starts from USD 160 per man-day. Travel costs or additional man-days may apply depending on location and inspection scope.

Check Production Before Early Problems Become Batch-Wide Problems

An Initial Production Check gives you independent information about how your order has actually started, not only what the production plan says.
By checking available materials, components and first production units against your confirmed requirements, you can identify deviations while correction may still be practical.
